Zombieland /Bienvenue à Zombieland

(Welcome to Zombieland)

I’d never heard of Jesse Eisenberg. And then I saw him in 2 films in about a week.

The first one was Adventureland (and you can feel a post coming, can’t you?) and Zombieland. The boy likes his lands, apparently.

Zombieland is a (very funny) comedy. It is set in a world where the most the population was killed by a virus that turns people into zombies.

There is Jesse as Columbus, a nerd who has survived by following his brand new rule book (most of these rules will be explained and detailed throughout the film). Woody Harrelson as Tallahassee, a kick ass slightly deranged guy who’s survived by kicking zombies’ asses (It is said of him that “When Tallahassee goes Hulk on a zombie, he sets the standard for "not to be fucked with". ) The guy is desperate to find twinkies. They meet by accident and decide to stick together for a while. That’s where the personality clash comes in and these 2 characters' interaction is delightful. They later meet a couple of female characters, Little Rock and Wichita who have devised their own way of surviving. They are heading to an amusement park next to Los Angeles.

It is not the most original storyline in the history of films, but the zombies look good, the action scenes are good, most of the lines are very funny, and you do like the characters.

Zombieland is obviously the nickname for the new world order. It’s not planet Earth anymore, it’s Zombieland. Simple enough title.

Why complicate it with adding a couple French words? There is a bad habit of adding “Bienvenue à” before some dystopian place. Bienvenue à Gattaca is one of these titles. ( I am not talking about Welcome to Collinwood or Welcome to Sarajevo, as these were the proper titles.)

I keep on wondering what this adds to the whole thing. It’s not a welcoming place. And there is still an English word in, so it’s not even part of an attempt to “French up” the title.

I can’t decide if this is a rule 1, a rule 2 or a rule 4 offence. Or all of them. It’s just plain silly.

But this shouldn’t deter you from checking this film out, because it is good fun. And apparently, there is a Zombieland 2 coming. Yeepee :D
