달콤한 인생 / A Bittersweet life

A sweet life

I don't know how to talk about this film without raving about it. It's brilliantly acted and fantastically directed.
It's the story of SunWoo (fantastic Lee ByungHun) who works in a posh hotel.
At first, you don't really know what his job is about, but it involves eating nice chocolate cake and beating up people.
SunWoo is asked by his boss to supervise his young mistress, HeeSoo and to find out if she's seeing someone else. If she is, her and her lover will have to be disposed of.
Our hero is taken by the girl's beauty, and wants to spend time with her, and when he discovers her other lover in her house, he can't bring himself to do something radical about it.
Meanwhile, some of the guys he beat up earlier want apologies, which he is not ready to give.
Things (and violence) escalate from there.
The original title (ie A sweet life) perfectly sums up the first 5 minutes of the film of the film:  it all looks happy and under control:  the boutique hotel, the fancy suits, the good food, the great view, and then comes the sudden reality of what his job entails, the violence of it, but there is still an illusion of control and happiness.
His encounter with HeeSoo makes him realise how empty it all is.
The Korean title is subtly more ironic than the translated one, as you don't expect things to turn sour (or should I say bitter?), just as SunWoo does not expect to discover he is not really happy until he meets HeeSoo.
