Just Married / Pour le meilleur et pour le rire

For better and for laughter

Just Married is a comedy with Ashton Kucher and Brittany Murphy who are “A young newlywed couple honeymoon in Europe, where obstacles challenge their ability to sustain the marriage. “ (thanks IMDB).
I don’t remember much of it, apart from being full of cliches, but I remember giggling a few times, so it probably was alright.

The French title parodies common wedding vows, you know the one that go  something like “To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health, to love and to cherish 'till death do us part.”
“For better, for worse” in French is “pour le meilleur et pour le pire” and it isn’t very hard to see what they’ve done there. No, it’s not.
Pire (worse) is just a letter away from rire (to laugh or laughter).

The “translation” device was used to signal that the film would be a comedy. Yes, there will be laughter. And there is a marriage involved.
People who are “just married” are called jeunes mariés in French - that would have worked, no?
